Am I the only one sick of modern football and the fact it's becoming a non-contact sport?

Several years ago FIFA had a clampdown on the so-called "rough stuff" so that the flair players could play without fear of being hacked down from behind. Their intention was to improve football as a spectacle, but it's actually done the opposite.

20 years ago that Norwich player who Klasnic "headbutted" would have been sent off himself and ridiculed by the media. Instead Klasnic gets a red card and no one mentions the diving Norwich bastard. Again at the weekend, Walcott gets a bit of a nudge and he's going to ground like he's been shot. This is now the norm in football and no one bats an eyelid.

Watching various highlight shows over the weekend it's amazing how many players got sent off for so-called high challenges or two footed tackles. 10 years ago most of them wouldn't have even been bookings. You hear arseholes like Gary Neville and Jamie Redknapp condemning these tackles saying they were "career ending tackles" but how many careers actually get ended due to tackles? Not many. Footballers have become tarts.

Some of my favourite Bolton players of the past are Jamie Pollock, John McGinlay and Mike Whitlow, but would any of these ex-Wanderers have a place in the modern game? Of course not.

What's the answer then? It's simple. Bring back the physical aspect of football. Let players get stuck in. No more of this yellow carding for petty fouls or red cards for tough tackles. If the players want to fight and headbutt each other let them get on with it without penalty. Can anyone deny they enjoy watching a good punch up? People want to be entertained, and not by diving tossers. They want to see a bit of passion.

I can't imagine anyone wants to see football go non-contact, but perhaps I'm wrong?

I agree with you, Natasha. But until the people upstairs take a firmer stance, players will continue to take advantage at every oppurtunity.

It's not the players fault, it's the people in charge, who's failure to clamp down on players who "dive", is making the game worse.

Diving should be penalised with suspension by video evidence after the event, if managers started losing players to suspension over it they would soon clamp down on it.

Notice how it's always the big clubs that cry and whine about tackling.

their managers also peddle the "Protect my players" bullshit.

Minor amendment, Dave.
Though having said that, there's a Chorley player who tries to get opponents booked & sent off.

The premier league has slowly turned into the Spanish league IMO, pretty much a non contact sport now where if you just touch someone you get sent off and the player who has been touched doesn't half make a meal of it.

I am not sure about the lower leagues but from what I have seen of the championship games on sky they are nowere near as bad as the so called ''top pros'' who play in our league, they get away with things that pundits like Redknapp would call straight reds.

There is hardly any play acting and if someone goes in with a good hard tackle both players just get up and shake hands after, which is just how it should be.

To be honest I much prefer a championship game between the likes of Brighton and Southampton to a so called super sunday clash between QPR and Aston villa, a lot better entertainment.

Hands up those who love a good football pitch punch-up.

Two of my favourite Bolton memories are John McGinlay punching Wolves players on a couple of occasions, once in the Play-offs and once in a big league game.

Gerry Taggart running half the length of the pitch to lay into the entire Wolves team was a great moment in Boltons history. It showed Wolves they couldn't fúck with us and we went on to beat them easily. If something like that happened now the ref would call the game off.

Gerry Taggart, there's a bloke you wouldn't mess with. Great memories.

Were you at West Ham when he choked slammed their keeper then chased John Hartson? I think Hartson did a poo in his shorts. It was ace. Apart from he got a red card and I think we lost.

Yes, I think at the time I flicked the v's at him and shouted something like 'you stupid fanny'.

Now I look back and think what a hero.

I was shouting abuse at Craig Forrest and was told to sit down or die at full time by some nice West Ham fans. Ofcourse I didn't listen to them though. Cos I'm fackin well'ard.

Fairclough, Taggart, Pollock, McGinlay, Blake. Hardest team we've ever had?

Andy Todd's the hardest bastard to pull on a Wanderers shirt in my time and you missed him out of your ID parade, Dave.

Agree about Andy Todd, but that Stig Tofting looked a right nutter.

He wasn't in the team that did Wolves. That's why I missed him out.

And Taggart would've twatted Todd imo.

I met Stig when we played at Anfield one year. He was with two of the meanest looking meat heads I've ever seen. Nice bloke though and was happy to shake hands with everyone.

Andy Todd leathered that wife-beater Stan Collymore. Give him his kudos, Dave.

He did well there. Collymore started it and soon regretted it. Taggart actually saved him from getting a proper twatting.

Excellent find, Sluffy. I recall that picture was across the back page of the News of the World. I kept it for ages. I probably either ate it or smoked it in the end (I was a student at the time).

Proper football is that. I'd rather watch that than Messi and Ronaldo acting like tarts.

They should do what they do in Aussie Rules. If a fight breaks out the refs just grab the ball, move 10 yards away and restart the game. It's amazing how quickly the fighting stops.

Every weekend they have a panel which reviews every game and dishes out fines and bans etc. based on the match video.
