Bolton currently 1-0 up against Villa. I know it's the Carling cup but the changes made seem to me like a positive experiment. Has Coyle learned a lesson from the previous few games?

What is the difference for us?

No Jussi? No Davies? Holden in? Ngog in? 451? 442?

What has done it for us.

Side vs Norwich:

Jussi
Boyata
Robinson
Cahill
Knight
Eagles
Petrov
NRC
Pratley
Davies
Klasnic

Team V Villa:

Bogdan
Steinsson
Gardner
Cahill
Wheater
Eagles
Kakuta
Holden
Pratley
Muamba
Ngog

The second team there is probably a variation of what most of would pick given the chance. The only change I would make from that now is Boyata for Steinsson. (Boyatta unavailable tonight though).

And guess what - we dont seem to be missing NRC - who still has not impressed me.

I think it's important that we don't jump the gun here. Yeah, it looks like he has made some changes tonight but this is the Carling Cup. I shall wait and see what Saturday brings but definitely a step in the right direction, I think.

Just to continue from above...

Jussi needs to stay out of the first 11. Putting Bogdan in is no bigger risk than keeping the faith with Jussi. Bogdan has to get the experience sooner rather than later. Bogdan also uses the ball quicker.

Gardner has to come in at left back. I thought it already but never really believed that Coyle would do it. He has had a cracking game and should definitely stay in. One of our main weak links on the pitch has been lack of pace on the left.

Wheater should have done enough to push Knight out - again something we all wanted to see.

Holden, Pratley and Muamba in the middle is a winning combo. Can also be altered by brining Mavies or NRC in when needed.

Petrov should play left wing though with Eagles on the right. Petrov has looked dangerous all season and the left side will be more secure with Gardner behind him. We also have Kakuta who could be a good impact.

Ngog up front supported by Eagles and Petrov. With the option to bring in Tuncay Klasnic Davies too.

Strongest team now:

Bogdan
Boyata Cahill Wheater Gardner
Eagles Holden Muamba Pratley Petrov
Ngog

He's not learnt his lesson, he's just put KD on for N'Gog with 20 minutes left. Bloody hell!

The radio folks seem to be thinking Ngog, Gardner, Holden and Wheater should be keeping their place or at least pushing hard.

Maybe we now have a formation that works away from home, knowing he can change it when we are at the reebok.

This is harsh.

KD has a good record against Villa.

Ngog was probably tired leading the line in his first start.

KD is better at defending from corners and other set pieces than any other forward at the club - we were defending a 1-0 lead away from home.

Only KD's harshest critics are suggesting he is completely finished and not even worthy of being an impact sub.

So to suggest this is a bad substitution is, in my view, grossly unfair.

Thing is we were on top and relatively comfortable in the system we were playing. When KD comes on we all know that the dynamic changes and the whole team play in a different manner. Perhaps the poster who said it was a bad move was thinking about this. Villa also ended up having their best spell of the game directly after Davies came on - perhaps due to us not having the same outlet and threat at the other end.

jayjay23 - that's a very fair response, in all honesty I hadn't looked at it that way. I am just a bit defensive of KD, not because I don't think he deserves to be dropped or is past his best now, but because he's created so much for us, even last season, and at his best he is a warrior and he deserves all our respect. But if that's what bwfcbob123 meant in his post, I have to hold my hand up and say, fair point.

I get your point hat. Who knows what the poster was thinking at the time though. I know I was thinking along the lines of - "why change it if we are doing it right?"

Definitely think the formation is set up differently to accommodate BKD, but much as I love the guy, I prefer this formation with N'gog as the "1".
A lot of defences push on to BKD as they know he hasn't got pace whereas N'gog gives them more to worry about.

That is what I meant. Kevin Davies has been a fantastic player for this club, and still has a couple of seasons in him yet, but I didn't think it was the right change at that time, and was also referring to the fact that Coyle seems to be afraid of not playing SKD, and reinforced this by taking off Eggnog when we were creating chances through him.
