So we have a criteria to decide who the "proper" fans are, do we?

We do. I'm sorry to say you didn't make it. Feel free to try again next year.

but times change and the Premier is the place to be - even if that is finishing 17th every season.

It might be the place to be from a media angle, and definitely a financial one.

But I'm talking as a fan. I'm trying to gauge whether people get more joy from the Premiership even though we have no chance of even finishing in the top 6, or would prefer to be in a lower league where every season brings the possibility of a promotion push.

I just want the club to do well regardless of the league we are in, it would be a financial disaster if we went down but it would not stop me going to the games.

I can't believe what some of you clowns are typing.

This just goes to show that internet forums really are full of clueless muppetts.

Having got hooked on Bolton Wanderers under the dark days of Phil Neal and spent my time visiting grounds like darlington, scarborough, southend and bury I cant believe that you retards seem happy to return to these times.

I still have to pinch myself when I look at the fixture list and see that BWFC are playing temas like Man Utd, City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal etc week in week out.

The fact that we can watch some of the best teams and players in europe for just over £300 a season is unbelievable and long may this continue.

On saturday we travel to Arsenal which is one of the best stadiums in the country, (appreciate most of you clowns wont be) the following week we host Chelsea which are one of the best sides in europe - are you really saying that you would be happy swap this for peterborough United and Reading respectively?

There is a very famous fable called acres of diamonds I suggest that you look it up on the internet and take heed.

dhigson, I do agree with you. The key thing here is that Bolton Wanderers Football Club needs premiership football or we will just be ruined financially. Anyone who doesn't care what league we're in doesn't care about the club. Most clubs who go down never come back - Coventry, Sheff Wed, Charlton, Leeds, etc. Does it look good fun being a Coventry fan now or a Charlton fan? No. Charlton had 9 seasons in the top flight before being relegated, now they are in league one and play teams like Scunthorpe, Chesterfield, Carlisle, Stevenage, etc.
We are playing in the best league in the world, every professional club in the land wants to be in the Premiership (except for some of our divy fans). We are able to sign quality players, watch the team on Match of the Day and live on skysports and ESPN.
Don't be thinking that it will be exciting to be in the championship because its not. Being in the championship is all about trying to get where we are now.
We really do have some muppets here.

Best league in the World my arse, watch La Liga when you get chance.

Don't give a fook what league we are in will always be a Bolton fan. Started following the whites in the early 70's travelled home and away through the 80's and 90's have enjoyed the time in the Prem and financially we need to stay there, but..

Travelling to Darlington, Exeter and all the smaller clubs had its moments and I miss getting a beer and not thinking that some rich Prem club is ripping the pi55 out of us.

The perfect mix would be,  Arsenal, Citeh, Manure, Chelski and the bin dippers mug off to a European league, the Prem implements a wage cap (somehoe they would be able to police) and we are on a more level playing field enjoying the game. Sky can pi55 off and cover the European league (hence need for wage cap) and we can have our game back..

La Liga is a lot better technically but it is far less competitive imo and yes I am aware Levante beat Real as I watched it.

Yes it would bother me for all the reasons that others have listed. I don't like what the Prem has become. It is now totally driven by money - those with the most money prosper and the other clubs struggle. Realistically every season all we can now only hope for is a mid-table finish and maybe a cup run, but if we got relegated there is a very strong possibility that we would never get back. It is not like it was - without money we could not hope for more than a one season stay like Blackpool and Burnley even if we got promoted.

As a fan of course I would still support Bolton whatever division we were in but playing and winning games against the likes of Morecambe, Accrington and Aldershot is not adequate compensation for losing the chance to play against (and maybe occasionally get a win) the best teams in England every week.

I don't think we will get relegated, but wouldn't dread a spell in the lower leagues all the same.

I quite like the thought of going to some of the smaller grounds tbh. Going to big stadiums is only interesting if you have spent a long spell out of the top flight.

The poor man's Leeds. They spent the money to get as far as the Champions League semi final, our money went on Gary Megson's 41 pointers.

I have an Auntie in her early 80s and don't ask the obvious as I don't know. She's never set foot in the Reebok and I don't think she did in Burnden either. She got hooked on BWFC by her dad and late husband who were fanatics. She listens to GMR every matchday, knows the players past and present, has her favourites and win or lose she will ring me after every match for a rant or celebration. To my mind she's a proper fan.

You're auntie is awesome and to me, she is a proper fan

As above, fully agree......right up until you called everyone muppetts, that I don't agree with.
Everyone is entitled to their opinions as everyone is different.

I would hate to drop down the leagues and then strive to compete to get to where we are already at.

She is a star. Follows them on GMR, talks about Jack and Alan like they are best mates.

Rang earlier to rant, I hadnt gone though so just got her version. She thinks Coyle is rubbish, perhaps she should choose our next manager.

Her and Gareth Williams are proper supporters. If only we had more like them.

Alan Gowling is a patronising prick imo.

I vote for your Aunt to take over from Coyle.

I'm not sure I'd be in any hurry to get back to the Prem if we went down. A few solid seasons in the Championship with some good cup runs (maybe even a European spot as losing FA Cup finalists) would be OK. I hate the current Prem set-up.
BUT .... there's no guarantee we'd stay in the Championship if we went down without a fight, and Leagues 1 & 2 are scary places after the struggles we had in the 80s and early 90s.
Then again, staying in the Prem and adding £6-7m to our debt every season is unsustainable anyway.

"I would be perfectly happy if my team was in a lower division. I enjoy watching players that aren't as good playing against teams that aren't as good, with not as many fans to bother me when I go to the matches. I would really enjoy it if the club was in dire financial straits and no one could ever watch them on television."

Makes sense. Good ideas.

It would never stop me going if we went down.

The big problem is the financial side, I support my club through thick and thin.

If I wanted to supprt a team that wins trophies I could have bacome another armchair red.
