erm - yes you can.
McAteer bought for SFA (alledgedly a team striop and a dozen footballs) from Marine and sold for £3.5 mill Curcic as mentioned palmed off to Villa for £4.5 mill Eidur Gudjohnsen (£200k?) sold for £4.5 mill
...we used to be great at this transfer business.

I think he was less than £300k.
£125,000 or something I think.
Yeah, maybe £300k was David Lee.

I think you're right. Didn't Mixu cost something like £300,000 as well?

I thought Jussi was also about £300,000. Can't really remember tbh.

Either way he was a bargain and could have been sold for a healthy profit.

Why am I wrong? Everything BF said in his post, Cahill can do after signing a new contract with BWFC.
Bet me Cahill signs a new contract. Any amount you like.
Nat is correct.

Whilst we're on this subject, our transfer policy changed when Allardyce came in. We built up a war chest under Rioch and Todd, and Allardyce inherited a decent bank balance and started focussing on buying players with something to prove like Okocha, Djorkieff etc and spending the money on wages. It brought us great success, but was never sustainable and it's got worse since, hence the debt.

That isn't correct Wanderlust - in fact it's the exact opposite.
We had big, big money problems under Todd - he bought players like Holdsworth and Elliot for well over what they were worth and the board HAD to sell to keep the bank away - that is why Todd resigned following the Per Fransen sale to Blackburn.
Okocha, Djorkaeff, Campo, etc came in as FREE transfers - with a largely unknown benefactor at the time by the name of Eddie Davies picking up the tab for their BIG wages.
Allardyce was ahead of the rest with this strategy that served him (and us!) well - the wheels came off a bit though when the players got too old and we didn't have anyone lined up to replace them - the money having gone on wages and the players had NO resale value. That's why when we finally did get some money from Sky Megson (or any manager we would have had at the time) was given it to rebuild the team quickly.
Looking back now I find it difficult to view Allardyce as the BEST Bolton manager we have had because what he achieved was truly remarkable BUT the long term effects on the club have financially crippled us for the foreseeable future.
