Walking races at athletics championships

I saw the end of the walking race in the National Trials earlier, have you ever seen anything so daft in your life?
Who on earth gets into this and tests out if they are any good at it? It is basically an event for failed runners. Do they not realise how bloody stupid they look walking like a duck?
But why is this a sport anyway? I mean so what if you are the fastest walker over a 10km? Silly sport for silly people.
