Following on from Doffcockers post about origins...........

As a teenager  my favourite watering hole was the Black Dog at the bottom of Halliwell Road. The landlord and landlady were Jim and Peggy Hunter and they ran a good pub and the ale was always reet. It was a hotbed for darts enthusiasts. Sadly it is now a Mosque. ( Sign of the times I guess.)
I also frequented the Lamb further up Halliwell Road as well as the Old Original British Queen ( Pomps ) and the Victoria British Queen at the bottom of Blackburn Road.

I can still remember the Kershaws crew coming in on a Friday and Saturday night selling Whelks, Mussels and Shrimps that they had just strongarmed from the Chinese Cockle pickers. Happy days.

Doffcocker was the cheapest pub that would let under 18s in to watch football, so its a pub I spent a lot of time in as a kid, along with Arkwrights on Vallets Lane, Hope and Anchor across from Doffcocker and The Kings Arms on Chorley Old Road.

For a Friday night out, I'm usually in one of the Heaton pubs, be it Doffcocker, Hope and Anchor or Finishers.
But for football watching its Halliwell Road - The Last Orders (formerly known as The Peel, I believe) or The Lord Raglan...both very cheap!

Also go to the Finishers quiz on Tuesdays when I can.

Reebok / Doffcocker - Similar story with me also!

A few other names to mention New Inn, Borough, Globe,

...the Victoria British Queen at the bottom of Blackburn Road.

I remember this one as Isherwoods, Tramways, Portland etc, etc.

Friends of my parents used to own The Kings Head and later moved to The Hope and Anchor - Flo and Peter Pollitt - maybe before your time though?

My real first regular though was The Trotters on Bradshawgategate, used to meet up with a number of other mates from school, spent many, many happy times in there.

Happy days and so long ago now!

I used to go in the Greyhound ,the King Bill and the Waggon on Manny Road, when I lived down there.

When  I moved to Deane my main locals were the Rumworth and the Con Club. Ironically the Rumworth shut last weekend, I had been going in there since 1974.

This area is going the way of many others. The Church shut last year, the Stags Head has shut after the landlord lost his licence over the EDL day, the Rumworth has now shut, the Queen Anne is currently closed but is being refurbished, so may be reopening soon. At the moment we are down to the Vulcan the Kings Head and the Cons club the only ones open.

Kept forgetting to respond to this - apologies Sluffy!

To be clear, I'm on about Kings Arms, a block down from Morrisons. Are we on about the same pub - just to be sure?

To be honest, we've only ever gone in to sit in the corner and watch football, keeping ourselves to ourselves. I can't say I've ever really had a proper chat with any landlord in my time - except maybe Dennis at the Finishers once.

Yes, sorry, the same one - I did mean the Kings Arms.

I'm probably going back about 20 years ago now - if not more.

It's a small world. In 1978 my father bought the bowling green at Four Lane ends opposite the Red Lion. The pub was a popular watering hole for Wanderers players. Frank Worthington would frequently pop into the pub after training for a spot of liquid refreshment.

Do you know Radcliffe Moor Road by any chance ?

My brother has a Garage on Radcliffe Moor Road. D & M Motors. M.O.T.s , Resprays and bodywork repairs. He lives in Little Lever village and supports Wanderers as well. If you have any car problems he is your man. He can get tyres at trade prices as well.

Small World indeed!

I used to work with a young man whose father owned (or was the lanlord?) of one of the pubs at Four Lane Ends.

He was a real character, always could make you laugh!  He was one of twin boys and he liked his drink.

Rather sadly he tragically died early about six or seven years back now.

RIP Adrian.

You must be older than me then Bolt-on, as I remember my dad talking about the Newmarket but I never went into it - did it change it's name or get pulled down?

I used to go into the two pubs around Folds Road school but can't quite remember their names - Lord Clive and Spread Eagle I think.

I don't remember the Dog and Snipe (do you mean partridge?).

Just before my time then, I'm old enough to remember the Waterloo (corner of Waterloo Street and Blackburn Road), the pub whose name I don't know halfway down Waterloo Street and the pub/s (was there more than one?) at the bottom of Waterloo Street and Turton Street (is that where the Dog and Snipe was then?).

I did do the Falcon though which was in between Waterloo Street and Folds Road - but I can't remember now the name of the street it was on?

Also did the Borough as well as the Globe on Higher Bridge Street, and the Founders which I believe is still there.

Happy Days!

The pub at the bottom of Waterloo st. was called the Waterloo...the pub you mentioned on Waterloo st. half way up, can't remember it's name. There was another little pub between Turton st and Waterloo st. called the Robin Hood, used to call in on our way home from work.. The Falcon was on Kay st.

Kay Street - yes I remember now, thanks.

So many pubs back in my youth - and I missed out on a lot of them by about 5 or 6 years or so, they had been closed down and many demolished.

All so different now.
