At work today, we were discussing racism, the extent of which is rather shocking. One of my colleagues said something along the lines of that people of my age like to have controversial views, and then said "sure when I was 18, I thought Hitler was great". I thought this was a bit odd coming from someone who I've only ever known to despise racism and racists, but there you go. I challenged him quite strongly about how he could ever have thought this, and he said "well obviously I don't think that now, but still..." and then went on to list the great things he did.

I asked him to summarise Hitler in 5 words, saying that (off the top of my head), mine would be "evil", "mass-murderer", "racist", "disaster" and "corrupt". He said that he'd go along with a few of them, but would also add "genius" and "complex". I said that Hitler's good points, if there were any, shouldn't even come into a discussion or summary of him, or at best should be a very distant footnote.

I find it an interesting topic. Do you think that Hitler's good points should even be discussed or brought up when discussing or summarising him? Would you view him as a mix of good and bad, albeit probably more bad?

I'm trying to not turn this into a "Hitler punchbag" thread  Grin

Hitler had a master plan for how he thought the world should be. Despite his plan failing he was psychotic genius. With one ball and a dodgy moustache.

I just found it alittle strange, that he would mention "genious" in a summary. I wouldnt have thought that would be the first thing that pops into your head, when describing him.

I think anyone (good or evil) who has the characteristics to become a leader of tens if not hundred of thousands of people obviously as something about them.

Two sayings you may wish to consider Jam -

One mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter, and

History is written by the victor.

So if Hitler HAD won the war - maybe 60 odd years on (and possibly speaking in German by now!), we might be thinking why anyone had even thought to think he was a evil man and fought a war against him and not have had the pleasure of dealing with the likes of the Pikey's and illegal immigrants as we do now!

There's always two sides to any story - just depends on which side you look at it I guess.

The man was a Cnut. However, Sluffy raises a few interesting points. Hitler never had a grievance with England. He actually admired us. If Hitler had won the war then the world as we know it would have been a totally  different place.

I doubt it.  The U.S. won the wars against the Indians but despite the fact that history is written by the victors there is still a great sense of shame over what happened.
