Anybody think the Carling cup would be made a bit more exciting if teams who qualified for Europe weren't included in it?

I know its a bit far fetched and its never going to happen but it would give teams like us and similar to us a reasonable chance of winning a trophy. It would be an even competition as the top 6 wouldn't be involved which would leave the rest of the 14 and lower division sides left to try and win it a swell as a European place?

I think that would devalue it even more.

So, qualifying for Europe would then preclude you from another chance to re-qualify the season after?

So, we should punish teams for being successful?

Genius. You should work for the FA, or maybe you already do. The first syllable of your username is quite apt.

I doubt the teams who qualified would appreciate that to be honest Noblet. It just means we get more satisfaction when we win a trophy; knowing the calibre of teams we had to beat to get to the finishing line.

On aside note, can we please be rid of this stupid "fair play" league. What a ridiculous rule.

I think you are onto something here but I'd go one step further.

What about only allowing teams who play in Bolton enter the competition? I reckon we'd at least get to the final.

What teams that haven't qualified for Europe this year would beat us easily? Everton are probably the strongest team but there isn't much difference in quality between the remaining teams in the premier league?

The Times recently complied a table which combined the amount of money spent by a club on wages, transfer fees etc with the amount of points you earned in the league (compared with what you'd expect to get considering your outgoings). Naturally, teams like City who spent £100m+ not to mention similar in wages all to get 5 points were rock bottom.

I'd much prefer a system like that to determine European qualification, opposed to the fair play rule (if we are going to have a stupid system which rewards teams regardless of where they finished in the league). Probably beacuse Bolton were top!  Smiley

Not a bad shout actually that Dh! Smiley It's just ridiculous the fair play rule. I thought they were taking the pigeon when they said if Fulham won the final last year; then Burnley would get a one way ticket to the big time!

Who did get that place in the end then? I thought Burnley would get it because they were the highest in the fairplay league after Fulham who, if they won the cup, would have a different places themselves as cup winners. But they're not in Europe on merit due to losing the finaL and not finishing high enough in the league, nor are they in Europe due to fair play. Neither are Burnley. Who got the place?

Nobody got it.

England didn't get the place after all.

The 3 places went to:
Gefle IF, Sweden
Randers FC, Denmark
MyPa-47, Finland

England was ranked 7th overall, behind Norway, Scotland & Ireland.

Not a fan of this idea. The magic of the cup is being able to go up against the bigger and better sides that should beat you by a cricket score and shocking them to knock them out. The 3-2 win at Anfield springs to mind in 2003/4. If the big clubs choose to overlook it in favour of bigger competitions, then thats their call, but I wouldn't see the point if everybody wasn't involved.

We are the club who played a reserve side in the last 32 of the UEFA Cup. We don't want to win anything.

I know. I just thought it would be more relevant mentioning that we got to the last 16.

Nor did we deserve to after that farce.
