Years ago when Savage was playing for Birmingham I was putting together a 3 day event (in Birmingham), which ended with a dinner and charity auction. I'd approached loads of celebs about donating an item to be auctioned and Savage was one of them...he sent his Birmingham top signed by all the Birmingham players.
Howard Kendall was supposed to be MCing the charity auction but fell ill 48 hours before the event. I'd mentioned this to Savage's agent just in conversation, not for a minute thinking a current footballer would do it. A few hours later the agent phoned back and said Savage would MC the event for free and wanted a table for 8 at the event which he paid full price for...around £2k.
£2k was probably nowt to Savage but the fact he gave up his time for nothing suggests he is a decent guy. He even bid on his own Birmingham top to make sure it went for £750.
He may be a tit on the field but I judge people off the field, and Savage is a top guy.
I've not met him, but everyone I know who has says this about him.
When you say Kendall fell ill, do you mean Booze Buster wasn't open that day?
