Half of the German team weren't German either. If it's good enough for them, let's invade Poland.

It will never happen, though he would be a very good player it just wouldn't be right to have a spanish player be in an england shirt.

Not a clue what you're going on about, and I was only being tongue in cheek[should have added smiley I know]you have to be English to play England, but then if you have English relatives like Pietersen for the Cricket team then I wouldn't mind.

What a load of tosh. He can't get in the Spain team so he thinks he can throw on an England jersey? Get out of it!

agreed :-) It isnt the dubious way of claiming nationality that bothers me (all international teams have done it at some point, us more than included) Its the fact that he obv. only wants to play for England as a second choice, a consolation prize almost. thats the niggly thing for me.

This is why the International game is so flawed. If you are born in Spain, you play for Spain, no-one else. If you aren't good enough for Spain, then that's tough shíte. This is how you end up with teams like Germany having squads full of foreigners. It won't be long before they introduce a transfer system where you can "buy" players for your nationality.

I suppose this brings around the age old argument of international team managers and back room staff too. Its enough to make you wonder weather theres any point in having international teams - maybe we should just have a real life fantasy football teams playing - and its simply the richest team wins then :-)

Exactly, I also disagree with non-nationals managing your country. It totally takes the "International" part out of it when you've got a load of Europeans managing African and Asian nations, and when nations like ours have to look abroad it is just embarassing.

This is why the International game is so flawed. If you are born in Spain, you play for Spain, no-one else. If you aren't good enough for Spain, then that's tough shíte. There should be an age limit. Freddy Adu was born in Ghana but moved to the States when he was 8 and became a US citizen at the age of 13 or 14. No problem with him playing for the USA. On the other hand, I think most of us can agree that it's ridiculous for Marcos Senna to move to Spain at the age of 26, gain citizenship at the age of 30 and then start playing for Spain. Then there are those cases in the middle like Eduardo, who moved to Croatia at 16 and obtained citizenship at 19. Perhaps the rule should be that you can only play for a country if you moved there before the age of 19?

It appears to be a moot point: Article 18.1.a within the Fifa statutes outlines that any player who has represented their country in an official competition, at whatever level, would at that time need to have held a passport for the country they later wish to play for in order to be permitted to make the switch.
Arteta played for Spain in the Under-16 European Championships and then in the FIFA World Championships at Under-17 level. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/8961817.stm

Good. The country is called England. Ditch Capello, forget about these loopholes that allow Spanish players to be linked with us, and just play the best English players we have.

Arteta is a decent player, but I'm massively against him for England and I'm glad he won't be able to. He probably wouldn't get in the first team anyway.
