It was a bit odd the way he left us in the first place possibly due to a conflict with the Orange one. Anyway it looks like he'll be appointed as the Sheffield United manager so I'd like to wish him all the best, oh and if the Blades ever gets drawn against us they'll leave with their tails firmly between their legs. But anyway good luck to a good old Bolton servant.

I was considering starting a thread recently about underrated Bolton players with him in mind. Probably one of my favourite players of the last decade.

Good luck to him.

I was completely underwhelmed when we signed him, and then after three games he was one of my favourite players at the time. A great pro, and never let us down (apart from his role in the Sammy Lee mutiny of course - but I blame most of that on fatty Nolan).

Good lord, really?

No, I'm lying to impress you.

As Batman said, a geat pro.

He was a solid dependable player. It's not all about the most prolific goal scorers and silly dances. He kept his head down and did his job and IMO he did it very well.

I remember that penalty he scored against Liverpool as if it was yesterday, and just in case anyone asks Reina was defiantly handling the ball outside his area.

Think he'll be a top manager one day.

And he nets me £25 on his appointment!

That's nothing. I remember the assistant's name. Andrew Halliday. Wasn't a penalty though, freekick.

Good luck to him, though a number of Sheffield fans seem to be unhappy about it.

I'm not surprised they're unhappy.

1. He has little experience at coaching/managing.
2. The experience he has got, is tarnished by failure.
3. He's got the blood of Sammy Lee & Kevin Blackwell on his hands.

Good luck to him.

I was disappointed when we signed him but as others said, he almost immediately changed my opinion of him.

I was really disappointed when he was quickly and quietly shunted out the door.  He deserved better than that.

I recall Nolan once saying that Speed only took a 2-week break from his fitness regime.  Shame Nolan didn't follow Speed's example.

The fact he was part of the Sammy Lee mutiny gives him legendary status for helping rid us of that Scouse peice of shíte.

For what it's worth I think Speed will make an excellent manager, his professionalism could never be questioned...... he has played under some of the best managers over the years, and will have taken a lot of each managers techniques in hand, it may take time but one day soon Speed will become a top top manager.
As much as I want Coyle to succeed I don't know if he can, too many Sammy Lee positives coming from him if Coyle should fail how many of us would be disappointed if Gartside wanted to talk to Speed?.

I'd be very disappointed if Speed was offered the job should/when Coyle fail(s).

The current chairman and board got lucky with the appointment of Allardyce, then appointed Lee, Megson and now Coyle. Hardly a glowing track record, is it?

What a tit.

I'm pretty sure Sammy Lee played under some of the best managers EVER but your theory didn't work for him so why should it work for Speed?

As much as I want Coyle to succeed I don't know if he can, too many Sammy Lee positives coming from him

That doesn't even make sense.

So they appointed the most successful manager in our modern history, then messed up with Lee, then they appointed someone to keep us in the Premiership (who did just that) and now they have appointed Coyle who hasn't been here long enough for anyone to form a valid judgement.

So that's one superb pick, one bad one, one who did the job required of him and one with potential.  It's better than most manage.

Gartside wouldn't have sacked Megson if he was doing the job required of him.

I said "did".  Megson got sacked after he'd kept us up, which was what he was hired to do.  Was anyone under the illusion his appointment was supposed to do anything other than keep us in the Prem?  He messed up last summer and paid with his job.  Getting Megson lacked ambition, but after what Lee did keeping us up was a good job.  The "mistake" was in keeping him on one season too long.

Yeah I can't believe some people hold this against him.  Speed's been around the block.  He would know when a manager is screwing things up.  I guess he should have stood there fiddling while Rome burned.

Then again I find the same people who castigate Speed for the "mutiny" are the same people who thought we should have been chanting Megson's name as we pissed away two points against Hull.

I agree about the Speed comment, but it's slightly early in his tenure to say that OC's appointment is a disaster.

Come back to me again in January and I'll see if I agree.

I hope Speedo does well myself.. great pro as a player, we'll see if he can cut it as a manager.  Strikes me as having a bit of a stubborn streak but I could be way off.
