Prepare for a boring thread.

I have been with the same dentist since I was a child. I have received a letter saying he is retiring due to ill health with immediate effect.

Another dentist is taking over but he will not be an NHS dentist like the last bloke, he'll be private.

He charges £40 for a basic check up. £40!! I nearly spat my warm vimto all over my maid.

Is £40 the going rate for a private dentist or am I being ripped off because I'm posh?

No, it's the going rate. I had a private one for years & in that time I had to have a (white) crown for the pricely sum of £800.
Thank the Lord I got the heads up on a new local NHS one.

I fcuking hate going to the dentist. They say the same thing every time I go, "you are fine". I always end up being after some scrotey tramp that takes fcuking ages in there, so I'm sat in the waiting room with fcúk all to do other than read flyers on toothbrushes and read 5-year old trashy magazines. Every time I'm in and out in literally two minutes. It costs me £16 a pop which is still a total rip off but £40 is just ludicrous, sort it out and get to the Westhoughton dental centre.

If people weren't such fcuking scrubbers and learned to look after their teeth properly, maybe it wouldn't cost so much.

This is going straight into the "quote of the week" thread. Wink

There are no NHS dentists currently taking new patients in Preston. I've heard it's similar in most other towns/cities.

It's fine just prove to them you are on income support, and most dental surgeons will take you on,you just have to prove you are poor.Which if your even quibbling about 40 quid you most certainly are.

At least some of your dentists are covered.  Here in Canada, unless its a medical emergency you pay either out of pocket or through employment benefits for dental coverage.  Mine is a measly $750/cdn per year... covers about one checkup and cleaning plus maybe one filling.

I've just managed to find a new NHS one in Warrington after 2 years of going to a private guy, cost has gone down from £31 to £16, plus the old guy always used to find some stupid little treatment he needed to give me to bleed a bit more cash from me!

our dentist has just turned private and is in the process of booting any NHS people off their lists, so you can either pay full whack or sign up to some denticare scheme.

they have been doing this booting process for about 2 years now and have so far forgot to take me off the NHS list so i still get my dental treatment covered.

ive needed nothing done since i was a teenager and had to get my wisdom teeth removed, but you can guarantee that as soon as i get the word that im no longer on the NHS list that i will grow another set of wisdom teeth and need a root canal!

another thing that pisses me off is that my wee lad will still get his treatment free, but they only do this on certin days......mondays between 12 and 3. his school dont allow for time off for doctors or dentists and the bloody dentist knows this.

Keep your money but brush your teeth twice a day. Simples.

Mine charges £25 per consultancy and all follow-ups are included.  So if you go back three times you still only pay the once.

So you think paying over the odds for things is how I became well off?

Just because I have a few quid doesn't mean I'm going to pay over the odds for anything. I'll pay for quality when it matters but the difference between an NHS dentist and a private dentist is the amount they charge....you get the same dentist.

I recently moved back from private care to an NHS dentist. Last December he made such a fcúk-up of taking a tooth out that I've just had to undergo hospital surgery to remove the rest of it. True story.
