When I try and boot up my laptop, it comes up with a message "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key". I haven't dropped it or anything, does anybody know what the problem is and how I could fix it?

Thanks,

If you can access porn on it then it isn't broken.

It could be one of the reasons and the easiest to sort out. If there's any USB pens/drives plugged in, pull them out and if it has a floppy drive see if there's a disc in it. Just try again and press enter to see what happens.

Which version of Windows are you using?

The problem is you have become too dependent on your laptop.

Try living your life in reality. You might surprise yourself and talk to a pretty girl, learn something new, or realise how wonderful it is to feel the warm sun on your pasty white face.

Like I said, just make sure no other drives or devices are plugged in to the laptop.

If it's still struggling, it sounds like it's trying to boot up from somewhere it can't. If you're confident enough messing about with the BIOS settings then do that. If not, then take it into PC World and get someone to take a look at it.

Go into the BIOS and check the boot order.  It ought to be booting from the hard drive, but typically the BIOS will be set to boot from CD/DVD first.  You could try overriding that and see if it works.

Not sure Jamster, I'm assuming that by now you checked to make sure there wasnt a disc in the optical drive, and no USB devices attached while you are trying to boot?  I know Ipod's can prevent booting on some systems (they did on my old computer).

No nothing, just a power pack lead. It just doesn't make any sense why it would do it. I'm not clever enough to go around fiddling through the system so god knows.

That's an error that tends to happen when the hard drive is going bad. I looked at a laptop for a friend once that did that, I eventually reinstalled the OS and it ran fine for a while then the problem reappeared. End result? Fried HD.

Take that as advice Jamster. If you manage to get it to boot, back everything up and start saving for a new laptop incase it ends up packing up.

You probably need to lubricate the draw to enable the discs to spin. Open the disc drive and rub some butter round it. That'll probably be the problem mate.

CD drives usually have a little hole next to the eject button. Get a paperclip or something similar and press it in.

Cue a Big Sharps comment.

He could try soaking his laptop in a bowl of soapy water. That should help.

Make sure you rinse it afterwards though because it will break otherwise.
