We  donate to a fund, usually no more than $5 a year, and we have someone in charge of birthdays.

They decorate the person's cubby and they get balloons (I hate balloons) and we give them a birthday card.  Any month that there are birthdays, they group the birthdays and pick a date and we have birthday cake (I'm not a cake fan).

The worst is that we have to SING Happy Birthday!  Even worse is when it is your birthday and you are being sung to by a bunch of people that don't give a rats arse and don't want to sing!

What is a cubby and did you know that some people have some sort of sexual attraction to balloons?

I misread that at first. I thought you said baboons.

A cubby is just an abbreviation for cubicle, which I have the joy of working in.

I don't mind the helium balloons as they don't pop.

If you ever ate American cake, you'd know why I don't like it.  Actually, it's not the cake I dislike but the 1/2 inch of icing they drench it with.

I don't like American desserts because they are extremely sweet so I stay away from cake and biscuits and prefer any type of fruit pie.

I've worked in Boston and found this a weird and uncomfortable experience. Luckily mine faced a window but the Americans couldn't believe when I told them how we work over here and were less than impressed with their working systems.

Maybe it is just me being an early Scrooge here but why do people feel the need to do a Birthday collection EVERY year for someone?
I would; while still reluctant; put money in if it was for a person (who I knew) 21st Birthday lets say but to go around every year borderline begging you to coff up for someone, just because they happen to be on the same floor as you, really gets on my wick. And as their are over 50 people on my floor, you are talking pretty much every week; someone coming around and sucking away all your loose change for a bacon roll.

Does anyone else have this long standing problem at Work?

As usual, I was made to look like a tight arse as I was the only one who didn't contribute to a complete strangers birthday collection.

I've worked in Boston

I have to admit Boston is my favourite US city. I'd recommend it above any I've been to.

It's ok, but the citizens are annoying to say the least.

Really?

I've got family in upstate and the people are great, but the city does my nut in. The suburbs are alright with their 'mini towns'

Manhattan is the wildest, weirdest, wackiest place in the world where you can do anything and be anything and no one will think you odd in the slightest. I love that.
Having said that, I don't consider New York to be anything like the rest of the country.
I don't do 'burbs'.

Or alternatively, do try and actually go there if you can. Vicarious living just doesn't have the same effect.

I am off to FL in september for the 2nd time and went to Tennesee (if that isn't how you spell it then tough  Smiley ) a few years before that but I have always wanted to go to NY.

Something about the US that I love, wouldn't mind doing a tour round it one day,

Seriously, I don't look at the walls; which I have decorated with postcards of Bolton and pictures of family and BWFC memorabilia.  I am on a computer, working...or looking at BBC, Sky Sports, Teamtalk, Bolton News, CNN. Wink

My favourite US cities are San Francisco, Huntington Beach and Berkeley, California.

Florida sucks.

Places I've not been to yet but want to go to are NYC and all the New England states and possibly Alaska.
