It's just Fantastic!

It’s like a soap opera with so many twist and turns, characters and sub plots!

First the good news Cav wins number three!

But that is not the talk of the Tour though!

Cav’s lead out man (the bloke he pedals behind immediately before he whizzes past him and wins the stage) an Aussie called Mark Renshaw as been thrown out the Tour for trying to head butt another cyclist three times!

The story is that Renshaw (who is without question the best in the world at the job he does) was leading Cav to the line when another teams lead out man (a Kiwi rider) tried to push his way in to where Renshaw wanted to go – and the Aussie tried to nut the Kiwi out the way!

(Basically the Kiwi wanted to ‘box’ Cav and Renshaw against the barriers at the side of the road and stop them from winning).

Remember there’s about a 100 bike riders peddling at about 45mph with these two trying to twat each other!  If one of them had gone down there would have been carnage as dozens of other riders would have been brought down too!

Well the judges were not impressed and Renshaw got the red card - "This is a bike race, not a gladiator's arena!” the judge said!

Big blow for Cav as he tries for more stage wins – but he as a great team – so I think he will win again before the end of the Tour – in fact I’m sure he will.

Just to tie up a few loose ends – on Bastille Day I’m pleased to say a Portuguese rider spoilt the Frenchies desperate attempt to claim a stage win on their day of the year.  Apart from that it was very much a quite day.

Tomorrow is somewhat of a hilly sort of race – with some nasty steep climbs.  Watch Andy and Albert dance with each other all day long, whilst maybe a break away by a rider trying to scoop all of the day’s ‘King of the Hills’ points on offer.

Whatever happens – it most certainly will not be dull!

Well it is over for another year and once again it as been riveting viewing.

Cav won two more stages, to bring his Tour win’s this year up to five!

He won on Friday

and again today at in Paris – the most glamorous and coveted stage win in world cycling.

The winner overall in the Tour was the Spaniard Alberto Contador.

It really was all about his duel with Andy Schleck (Luxembourg) as many had predicted before the race started – they are by miles the best two riders in world cycling.

The big controversy of this years Tour happened on Monday as the rode up a bloody big mountain.  Andy who was at the time winning by 31 seconds sprinted off up the mountain to try and break Albert – and he very well might have done to but disaster happened – incredibly at this level of cycling Schleck’s chain came off and he had to waste precious time putting it back on again.  Alberto saw this and shot off – ending up taking 39 seconds (remember this amount because it becomes very important later) off Schleck to have a 8 seconds lead at the end of the day.

Now in cycling there are rules and etiquette.  Although what Contador did was well within the rules it did break cycling’s most fundamental rule of etiquette which is that you never profit from them due to a mechanical fault.

You beat the man on equal terms – not because he was unlucky to have his bike break down and yours didn’t.

Although there was other days in the mountain Alberto was now in the winning position in that just so long as he kept up with Schleck he would win the Tour – because he was by far the better Individual Time Trial rider of the two (a stage that had to be rode yesterday) and that somehow Schleck had to crack Contador and get some time back on him (knowing that he would lose some of it on the Time Trial stage).

Well Contador sat behind Schleck through the rest of the mountains – and indeed went on to win more time on the Time Trial stage – to win the Tour by – wait for it – precisely 39 seconds!  The exact same time he had gained when Schleck’s chain came off!

In footballing terms it is like when one of the opposition players gets injured – and instead of kicking the ball out to play so he can get treated – you play on and score a goal that turns out to be the winner!

Ok, Alberto won – but his win is in cycling terms tainted.

Was he right to do what he did – the cycling world is pretty much split down the middle on this.

Schleck to his credit as not made anything of it – and Contador is a great rider who probably would have won anyway – but then again he may not have!

Well that’s the Tour for you – everyone is full of drama and excitement.

Those of you who have read my ramblings should really try and get into next years Tour – it really is facinating and gripping viewing – it really is.

The most boring tedious uninteresting spectacle  of the sporting year, how anyone can watch that for three weeks is totally beyond me, I have tried and  I couldnt find anything remotely interesting in it at all.

The only slightly exciting thing that happened was the guy who got banned for head butting an opponent 3 times, which I thought was very impressive to do without him falling off his bike.

Apart from that the most boring event of the year

Well fair play to you for trying HJD.

You are certainly in the vast majority in this country in not getting into the Tour but I find it a totally absorbing event!

Each to there own I guess.

I quite like baseball!

I've been fortunate enough to have been to a game at Toronto, Oakland and LA over the years.

How about you doing a bit of a feature of it (or whatever sport you like the most - apart from footy obviously) like I have tried to do for the Tour?

You don't have to go daft like I might have done on here - just point us in the direction of some interesting games or gossip, or tell us the teams and players to look out for - anything really - just to share your interest with others who might discover a sport they didn't know much about and come to get hooked on.

Go on - you know you want to!

I wouldn't mind that but I don't consider myself as an authority on any of them as I am still finding my way as a fan. I just enjoy the American attitude to sport and sport broadcasting.

Baseball is a 162 game season so its hard to predict the winners until the playoffs start. A team could come from nowhere with a late run, momentum going into post season is a big thing

The next thing I want to get into  is the American College football season, if you google the biggest stadia in the world   4 of the top 6 are USA college stadia with capacities of over 100.000, which are sold out every game , I just can't get my head round such crowds for basically games between 2 universities.

Go for it then fella!

I'm no expert on the Tour - I simply write about it because I'm interested in it.

Start a new thread on what ever you want to tell us about - American Sport in general if you like - and just type away.

Don't be discouraged if you don't get loads of reply's - just do it because you like it and want to share your interest for it.

I'll certainly be reading it!

Thanks for the encouragement, I will seriously think about giving it a go, maybe when the MLB playoffs start and the NFL season starts (round about the same time)

If you need a feature regarding NFL Sluffy, give me a shout. I'll leave it to you to decide how much I put because I could ruin Manny's server beyond repair if you let me but I'm well aware it is a minority sport - on here as much as it is in the UK as a whole.

On topic though good to see Cavendish win in Paris. I don't know much about it (le Tour) but there's just something about seeing a Brit come riding home under the Champs Elysees (fcúk off Sharps before you start).

Obviously it's a team sport and the last stage is just one of many but still, if we can't win it all seeing us win the grand finale, even as a single thing, is a bit of alreet.

Seeing you document the Tour so well though Sluffy has meant I really want to do my best to bring the NFL to the "uneducated", so in a month or so give me a shout!

Go for it Chris!

I tried to get into it about 20 years ago but I soon lost interest.

Will maybe give it another go if you start a thread up about it.

Looking forward to you doing it - I'm pleased if my little thread on the Tour as got you and HJD motivated about doing stuff that interest you both for here.
