Agreed, but I think we're sorted for the midfield if we get Wilshere on board. Centre back and up front are the big priorities

Upfront would Martin Palermo be a good gamble? He has an amazing goal record with Boca, and he has scored in nearly every game he has played for Argentina recently. He is 36, but he is surely a natural goalscorer.

Martin Palermo is one of my favourite players, but he's past the point where he could start 30+ games a season in the Prem.  Very dangerous impact sub, or for a few select games, but not what we need.

If you want to bring in a player from South America then we should get Fred, who used to play for Lyon.  Probably the most under-rated striker in world football (except by himself, he thinks he's God).

Would you prefer "Frederico Chaves Guedes"?

Yeah, but the headlines if he scored an own-goal would write themselves: "Fredly Fire", "Drop Dead Fred" etc

Could sing that one often enough.  I think he has something like 150 goals in 200 starts.  He is a massive arsehole though.  If he was less of a dick he'd be playing for Spurs but Harry pulled out of the deal because he messed them about.

If he has 150 goals in 200 starts, who cares if he's an Arsehole?

Lyon fans did.  His strike-rate for them was 1 goal every 2 starts and they still hated him after a while.  He's a better player than Benzema (as a personal opinion) but he lost his popularity and never got it back.  He was on a free in the summer (we were linked by L'Equipe) but he went back to Brazil.

He has 137 goals in 237 appearances at club level, and has 4 goals in 9 for Brazil. Still pretty amazing if you ask me.

If he turns out to be a dick we can just change it to "Frederico, you're a wanker, you're a wanker". God knows what we'd come up with if we signed Bury player Michael Gash...

"You're not a very good football player, Michael. Although that's merely a subjective opinion and doesn't affect your value as a person in your own right"........or something along those lines.

*edit* why are you unwilling to change the laws of England?  I get the historical reference, but not sure why it's your 'motto'.

Oh I stuck that on a few nights ago when I'd had a few. I really like Latin phrases, they look quite good no matter what they actually say literally. But I think my original thinking was something against the laws of our land changing to suit foreigners who live here more than us who already live here.

How would that "Gash" chant above go? You can decide for yourself if the pun was intended or not.

I think Fred just signed for Napoli

I have to say, Azreal - you have been on fire lately with your posts! I can just imagine the faces of our opponents in the stands when that particular chant starts up!

He's a good player, no-doubt about that, however, if we are looking to get Wilshere back on loan, what would be the point of paying 3-4m on him? It would be more appropriate if we used that money to invest in a striker.

Agreed.  But given a choice I'd much rather sign Boateng than loan Wilshere, as loaning Wilshere does nothing for the club in the long term.  Boateng's partnership with Annan was superb and would be very similar to him playing alongside Muamba.  He's also far more commanding and dominant than Wilshere; which we could use.

I suppose, but we all know that we have a limited budget, and we should be looking to spend on a striker first, and obviously the Wilshere deal would not include a transfer fee, so it is probably best for the club that way.

I must admit I would rather have Boateng but if it means not signing and good striker then I am not to sure, tricky choice but I can't see us winning the race for Boateng anyway if he was available with how good his world cup has been.
