Now I quite like people getting patriotic and getting behind the country - and I don't mind seeing people having pride in our flag - even though many do it somewhat tackily - but I can't believe for one second that Mr Cameron would ever even dream of flying the flag in his own home and so the flying of it at 10 Downing Street seems to me nothing but a cheap PR exercise at trying to get a bit of nationalism going - particularly in view of the massive cuts in public expenditure that we will be facing immanently. Would much prefer The Queen flying the flag at Buckingham Palace, and all the Town Halls up and down the country to be putting them up (not only for a football match) but all the time like the Americans do. Am I on my own thinking like this? English flag to fly over No 10 during World CupDavid Cameron has said he will fly the flag of St George over No 10 during the football World Cup in South Africa. The Prime Minister told MPs that the move would not cost anything and he hoped would help unite the nation behind the English team. No matter what part of the UK they represented, he said he hoped all MPs would be shouting "come on England". http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/politics/10274536.stm

If he or any of the coalition had any true pride in flying the St George then they would make St Georges day a Public Holiday so we all could celebrate being English!
As it is I believe he/they are just trying to win over the populous with this token gesture
Anyway with regards to public holidays we already know they are trying to reduce the number of them by at least 2 days!

There's a lot of stuff flying around at the moment about displaying the flag being a tad illegal. I thought it was a load of bollocks till I found this. I know the article was from 2006, but I'm not aware of anything to the contrary either. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/5211952.stmCurrently it is illegal to fly a national flag without permission from a local council - unless it is flown from a vertical flagpole.
The rule means thousands of football fans were technically breaking the law during the World Cup by displaying the Cross of St George

I like to see a bit of patriotism and it surprises me the laws that are in place regarding the St. George and Union Jack. I have a Union Jack hanging in my house. As for the US flag, all government (federal and state) buildings (which includes all post offices, too) put the flag up each morning and lower it at sunset. There are strict rules on the way the flag is treated (mustn't touch the ground, can't be thrown away/has to be burned in a solemn ceremony, etc.). I realize that there are some anti-American (jealous?) types on here, but what is wrong with them being proud of their country and their flag? It should be more like that in England, in my opinion.

But I have St George hanging proudly in my apartment window - and has been ever since I moved here! My apartment is like a mini-England with the St George, The Union Flag, Sky tv, etc etc etc (only thing is that I do not have any alcohol in the apartment!). I even celebrate St Georges Day, they way it should be - the English Way (drunk)

That's actually quite sad. If you love this country so much, then why not live in it.

I can still love my country and not live there. I was born in England and proud to be English, but no longer proud to come from England.
Just like I will always be Bolton through and through, although I no longer live in the Borough (Born in Bolton and proud to be a Boltonian, but no longer proud to come from Bolton)

What the fcúk is the poll about anyway?
Chavs at number 10?
What is chavvy about showing a bit of pride in your nationality, think you have been down south too long and you have had wet wankers twist your arm into thinking being proud of being english makes you a member of the national front.
Anybody who has the English flag flying outside there house is beneath Sluffy apperently so please address him as Lord Sluffy for the remainder of the world cup.
I applaud Mr Cameron however national pride should be forever not just for sporting events.

Chavy? Me? And you have come to that conclusion because I am better than you? Either it means something else in Holland or once again you're just being a tit.

You better than me - in what way, or is that just in your dreams? Me being a tit? - well it would take one to know one, wouldn't it? Holland - erm, I actually live in Flevoland, but work in Nord Holland. Holland doesn't actually exist over here - the country is officially called The Netherlands (or Nederlands)
