Rio Ferdinand 'out of England squad'

England captain Rio Ferdinand could be ruled out of the World Cup after suffering a knee injury in training.

The 31-year-old centre-back had a scan after hurting his left knee following a challenge with Emile Heskey during Friday's first training session.

He is getting a second opinion but a Football Association source has told the BBC "it's not looking good".

The FA is due to confirm the seriousness of Ferdinand's injury later and make a statement.

Ferdinand emerged from hospital on crutches and Tottenham's Michael Dawson, who has been put on standby, could fly to South Africa in the next 12 hours

I'm a bit disappointed.

When we flop out we could have quite easily placed the blame on his defensive ineptitude and duff captaincy. Now I'm looking for another scapegoat.

At the moment, Ferdinand, King, Carragher and Dawson are all on the same level IMO so losing him isn't that much of a problem, he can easily be replaced (on the topic of centre halves, Upson is the worst ever).

I was massively against him being England captain in the first place so I see this as good news, I wanted Gerrard captain even though he's a cheating scouse thug tosspot.
