I guess it depends what sort of person he is. If it's just about money then he'd go to Everton. But maybe he wants to play every week as he is 28....then someone like Bolton could step in.

He's only 26 too, not 28. So he has a bit more time to move on if things don't go according to plan.

26 is not old but if he was premier league quality he would have had a chance in the top flight by now with some team.

Plus he is a cocky bastard who through a strop when leeds would not let him go in January.

I would be suspicious of any League 1 player who wouldn't be pissed at not being allowed to join a Premiership team.

As I remember it he withdrew his Transfer request, because he wanted to help Leeds to get promoted. Or maybe no-one wanted him.

I wouldn't mind him here because we are in desperate need of a striker with pace and can finish, just because he's in a lower league does not mean he's a bad player, he's on a free, if things dont work out, then we could sell him for a profit. When money is tight we need to gamble on some players.

I think it is a bit of a myth this thing about being able to sell on players who have proved themselves good at a lower level if they don't make it at Premiership level.

The thing is once they sign for a Premiership club - they are on Premiership 'wages'.

As an example it looks as though we will be letting Shittu go on a free because no lower clubs can afford his wages AND a transfer fee.

If you think about it a bit - if things were that easy - then all Premiership clubs would be buying up all the talent from the lower leagues and turning a profit in that the player comes good in the Premiership they win - if he doesn't then they simply sell him back to the lower leagues for a profit - they win.

It simply doesn't happen like that - and the reason is the massive increase in wages the players get being at a Premiership club.

Well then we could let him go on a free, we wouldn't lose anything!

If we sign someone - we would give them a contract of say £20k per week for say a minimum of 2 years.

That comes to around £2 million!

In all probability the likes of Beckford would be looking for both more money AND a longer contract  - wages alone could realistically be expected to be in the region of £4 to £5 million!

Yes he can finish at leauge one level, I am not saying he is poor just beacuse he plays in league one i am just saying the guy is 26, who has had alot of time football wise to prove that he is good enough to play at a higher level but nobody has touched him so what does that tell you?

Case and point - Danny Shittu - reported to be on 18k p/w

18k p/w x 52 weeks x 2 years = 1,872,000
Transfer fee = £2m
Total loss on Danny Shittu = £3,872,000

Not bad for 2 years!

I'm pretty sure the original comment was just about Beckford, not rubbish like Shittu.

Even if he isn't upto the Premiership, clubs in the Championship will queue up for his signature. I know for a fact Wigan have about 6 clubs wanting Jason Scotland.....another who looked red hot at Championship level but failed (so far anyway) in the Prem.

To answer the original question, I'd say yes. Following on from Sluffy's thread about where we should strengthen first, most have said we need a goalscorer. Now whether he's in League One or not, the lad is a goalscorer. He's fast, and knows where the goal is. There's examples of players from League One both flopping and also making it good. But the thing is we are more than willing to accept the club gambling on players from abroad for a similar sort of wage and transfer fee as Beckford would go for - despite them only looking "great" in a league far inferior to our own.

If we signed Beckford, there's a chance it might not turn out. But is this not true of any signing? You can't guarantee anyone will remain good in football, you can only go on what they've done before. And my guess is if he does go to Everton, he will come to the Reebok sometime in August and really make us aware of "what we could have won".

We all know we need a striker, a goalscorer. Beckford is one, we just don't know if he can bring his game up two levels. Well how else are we going to find out apart from buying him? Go for it Coyle.
