Ok, once again its not been a pretty season - but I think things have changed.

It used to be about getting 40 points to survive, but these days I reckon its several points less than that.

Last season we finished 13th with 41 points - with the 18th place club being relegated on 34 points - this season we finish 14th with 39 points with the 18th place club being relegated on just 30 points.

But let's have a look who finished just ahead of us -

In14th place with 39 points - we finish immediately behind Sunderland (who have spent £200 million on players in the last 3 seasons - with the much talked about Steve Bruce as manager), with Fulham (with the manager of the season above them), and Stoke (who everybody agrees have had a great season) above them.

With all this is mind - have we truly had a bad season?

Its been a bad season no doubt about it. I mean the number of games we did better than expected you can count on two fingers (Birmingham away and West Ham away - and both those teams were in poor form when we played them).
We have failed to score in so many games. We haven't shown up in many games. We've put in some shocking performances. Its been utterly woeful. We are absolutely crap. End of discussion.

Bad season in my eyes I was never a fan of the ginger one,but too many heavy defeats have made Coyles tactical nous thus far a little hit and miss.It was a horrendous run of games for him at the start but tactically (imo)he got it all wrong, and had it not been for some woeful teams below us(we cannot keep relying on teams being worse)Ithis season would have been our last in the top division. Now Coyle needs to prove his skills in the transfer market, interesting to note no Elmander in the squad today as it's not just incoming players we will be interested in but also who he lets go,but next season is the one to judge him.

I have to agree with that about we were lucky there were some really poor teams down the bottom this season. Portsmouth with a 9 point deduction and a team thrown together, Burnley who didn't win away all season with a championship side and Hull were woeful and sacked Phil Brown at a crucial point. We picked a great season to be awful.

Yes I thought that was interesting about Elmander, there was no news that he was injured. I think he has played his last game for the club. I think we will see a lot of players go this summer - the likes of Elmander, Shittu, Andy O'Brien, Riga, Klasnic, Wilshere and Weiss (back to their clubs). Having said that I do expect there to be money for Owen Coyle this summer to make the team more his own. It will be interesting to see who comes in.

Ok we havent beaten every team and we have conceded alot of goals but all in all i think its been a fairly good season because we have not been relegated with the position we were in when OC took over and we will be playing in the top league again next season.

Roll on next season to see what will happen after OC has had the summer to put his own mark on the team.  Cool

It improved once Megson went. But still not the best. Hopefully next season will be an improvment.

There are two answers.

For the armchair fans it's been ok, for the few who've actually witnessed us home and away it's been one of the worst in living memory.

Not really, Last season at the end I would have been quite happy to never see another football game again it was that poor. Im not really feeling that at present because weve seen some better stuff under OC and I know we will try to play the ball on the floor even more next season.

I feel just as bad as last season. Maybie even worse, because it got so early that it showed that Burnley and Hull would not win another game, and than we were safe and had nothing to play for. It got more and more booring to watch. I hope Coyle will get us to play more on the floor, because it cant get any worse.

I have to register as an armchair fan due to my location; however, I have to agree that for armchair fans it was an "ok" season.

However, as stated above, it is better than the end of last season under Megson, where I actually considered turning my back on following us because it was that depressing to watch and there was no hope or expectation that we'd actually win games...and I've been around since 1960s and the the old 3rd division.

If available, I'd rate this season as an overall "below average/average" season in as much as we survived.  However, that is not how I want to spend future seasons.  I'm ready to be entertained and I am also ready to start having belief in our ability again.

I hope that the Board can afford to financially back Coyle and I really hope that Coyle can get the results that we crave while playing the attractive football.

Ok season. Room for improvement. Honestly, end of the day we showed glimses of being able to play some good stuff and finished quite comfortably safe, you'd think we got dicked 5-0 every game the way some of you are going on.

I can't help but think some Bolton fans will never be pleased because they expect Barcelona esque football with nothing less than a top 7 finish.

Its ok every season people making the excuse oh it's only because there were poorer teams- this season Burnley and Hull- last season everyone was paddling out the same line about Boro and Newcastle.

We finished 14th. If Hull, Burnley and Portsmouth had not been there, we still had more points than Wolves, Wigan and West Ham.

But, Jimbo, if Hull, Burnley and Portsmouth hadn't been there, how many more/less points would we have compared to Wolves, Wigan and West Ham?

If all the teams which finished above hadn't been there, we would have won the league. Seems like everyone is desperate to fabricate reasons as to why we are shíte. We have plenty of reasons for that but to say we stayed up because of the failings of the bottom trhee is simply not true. Yeah, they were poor, but we finished on 39 points which is enough to stay up in all but one season (when, ironically enough, we stayed up with 44 in 2003).

As for whether it has been a 'good' season or a 'bad' season, I agree with Sharps. I wouldn't says it's been either. We stayed up with was the main aim since Coyle came in. We have done that although I'd hardly say that constitutes a 'good' season. We haven't been relegated either so I wouldn't say it was a 'bad' season either.

On paper, we finished midtable. You can argue about the merits of the 14th place finish all you want, the fact of the matter is we're the 14th best club in England at this moment. Not bad considering the troubles we have had.

The season has been one to forget, as was last season, but I am far more optimistic about teh future than I was 12 months ago.

Just watched the Birmingham game on football first. ANYONE who thinks we haven't played football since Coyle came in needs their eyes testing.

A very nice mix of good football and smart long ball.

It's been a season of two halves for me, and it doesn't take a genius to work out where the line was drawn. At the start of the season the general feeling among the fans was one of disappointment because this time last year we all said, not good enough, the squad needs changing. We hardly changed a thing, or it would seem going off how we started the season.

I worried for us in November/December time when we had been battered off Villa, Chelsea twice, and then the Ricketts horror show at home to Blackburn. Then we all said we had a "winnable month" in December, in which we won once. In Megson's last game I really thought at the time we would get rid... but probably too late to save us. Luckily for us we sacked him the next day.

Some will say Coyle hasn't done much since he came in, but as I've said on numerous occasions he's working with a squad that right up until Megson's departure, was heading straight down. Coyle turned it around, and while the results haven't always been there the performances have been a massive improvement in my eyes. We look to play it, and we look to get at teams - even if we are away at Arsenal or Man City.

And crucially we beat the teams around us, and that's what kept us up. So I'd say it is quite black and white. Megson's time - bad season. Coyle = much better. I can now sit back and watch what Coyle does with this squad and look forward to a new season for the first time in about 3 years.
