For all the fanfair surrounding Owen Coyle when he arrived at the club he actually has a worse points record than Gary Megson this season. He has also managed some of the most pitiful performances seen by the Bolton faithful for many a year.

Do we trust him to turn it round? If media reports are to be believed Coyle is set to buy half the Burnley squad. Yes, the same Burnley squad that was relegated.

I don't trust this man. This is another fine mess he's got us into.

I think the board were banking on Sammy Lee continuing Fat Sam's good work but it rarely works like that. Although Coyle is doing a good job of continuing Megson's work!

He hasn't done much so far in his 5 months with us so cant see him working miracles in a 6 week pre season. He hasn't convinced me yet but fingers crossed for an improvement.

I agree that the majority of Megson signings, Lee excepted, were pretty shite.

I agree our results have not really changed, but we have seen some good football. And his job so far was to keep us in the league, I put my trust in him to push us up the table next time around.

Just stating my opinion that i think their could have been a thread on players you would and would not keep....no need to be all high and mighty about it.

Bit of an idiotic post here Natasha. I know you want to deflate the optimism that people are starting to get now we are safe, but you can't argue against Coyle so far. Took a club from 19th (and destined to go down) to 14th (as I believe it will stay) and ended two poor runs - the clean sheet one (zero to five in the league) and the defeat-to-victory one. He's brought in one of the most talented young players to play at the club in years with Wilshere...

And all of this with a squad that was plummeting head-first into the Championship. Not a bad job for four months' work.

And yet he did it by gaining less points than Megson from the same number of games.

Who's to say Megson wouldn't have done the same.....and we'd have saved on compensation that could have gone towards signing Rob Earnshaw.

You could see it that way Chris, or you could look at 19 games for 18 points which is a worse record than even disastrous Megson could produce. And when you consider all the goodwill that greeted Owen's arrival, it really isn't that good.

I,m far from saying he should go but he's done little so far and still has much to prove. Hope he does it for all our sakes.

Westander has hit the nail on the head. Megson was a sour-faced arsehole who alienated the Bolton fans. Coyle was a breath of fresh air, keen to get on with the fans.

Therefore Coyle gets the benefit of the doubt by the easily fooled Bolton fans.

Megson did better than Coyle this season....FACT.

Well that's it, I'm not saying he's done all that much yet but he was given one objective initially and that was survive to the summer, which he has done. I didn't expect us to finish any higher than 14th when he came in, did anyone else? You can have anyone you like in charge but with a team the (lack of) quality Megson put together it would struggle. Now Coyle has his chance to build his own team, and hopefully take us back up the league. Nobody knows what will happen yet, but he's earned his opportunity.

This 14th thing is a red herring. 36 points would have seen us relegated most seasons. When Coyle came we had 18 points from 18 games, he has got 18 points from 19 games. All the hype, good feeling that came with him I think we all expected better.

Not sure I read too many posts on any Bolton forum suggesting he would do worse than Megson. Quite rightly you would have been laughed off.

Agreed. We have survived purely because this is the worst Premiership EVER. Any other season we'd have gone down and Coyle would have had to explain how the hell he managed to get LESS points than Megson.

To be honest all taken into account I'd say it's about right with what I expected really. True I think we should be beating Portsmouth and Fulham at home, but equally I didn't expect us to win at Stoke and West Ham. But the point I was making was that whatever happened or didn't, whatever our final points total, the only thing that Coyle was going to be judged on was survival, or relegation. He got survival, so in my eyes he's been a success so far.

True I think we should be beating Portsmouth and Fulham at home...

But we DID beat Fulham at home. Just that Clattenburg was the only person on the planet who saw fit to disallow our goal and penalise Kevin Davies instead.

Just wait till we see him at the Reebok next time.

Owen Coyle is a shocking manager and should leave this club immediately*

*I'm so bad at WUM attempts.

As Gordon Brown said in the 2nd debate - "Get real". Owen is here to stay and it feels like a massive weight has been lifted off the supporters' shoulders with him replacing Megson.
