For years Jussi was always the second name on the team sheet for me (Davies being the first) and probably the individual player most responsible for us keeping our Premiership status for nearly a decade.
But aren't keepers suppose to get better the older they get?
Keepers mistakes are always magnified more than anyone else’s and playing behind an unreliable defence composing of the likes of Knight, O'Brien, Samuel, etc, can't be helpful to him but for me he didn't have his best season this time.
No question about his class but is it time to cash in on him and bring Al Habsi in instead.
Is it thanks and good bye or will a tighter defence next season allow Jussi to shine again?
Stay or go?

Jussi has made mistakes in his career, I can think of quite a few this season, but he's been an exceptional goalkeeper for us, no doubt he has won us in the past something like 15+ points a season.
You have to also take into consideration our poor defence, if your opponent has most of the possession and chances, it's no wonder why we have a shocking goal difference, constant pressure sometimes and our defence not really having a consistent back 4 to get an understanding means Jussi is left with a lot to do, it's going to lead to goals and make Jussi make mistakes.
Put him in a top side, he won't need to worry as much and he will have confidence in his own team, his concentration would be better, he would need to learn to just pass it to a full back or do a long throw, as the top sides play usually play from the back, instead of a long punt[his kicking isn't his strong point]
Sometimes he goes down to easy, sometimes he lets silly goals go in[e.g Rosicksy and Fabregas @ the Emirates]sometimes he doesn't command his box from crosses/corners, sometimes he doesn't communicate[Ricketts O.G @ the Reebok against Blackburn], it's easy to remember the bad displays than his numerous good ones, without Jussi there would be have been no Europe, no top 6/8 finishes.
People say Al Habsi kept us in the league 2 seasons ago, when Jussi got injured, when Jussi has a poor game, they hold this against him, and say Al Habsi is better and should be our no.1, they never stop to think what Jussi has done for this club, and maybe what a poor defence he has to put up with.
You try and get confidence from a defence that have Paul Robinson and for most of the season a poor Zat Knight, try and get confidence when we score o.g's and we never come back from a goal down, try and get confidence in your self when the other team have most of the ball and are getting through your team at will, try and get confidence when a corner is cleared and you know it will lead to another attack on your goal, try and get confidence in your team when a 2-0 advantage doesn't usually provide 3 points.
Jussi is a brilliant goalkeeper, a proper legend. Everyone makes mistakes, everyone has a bad day, Jussi has given is all for this club, passion is there, the quality is there, he's BWFC.

I really didn't think there would be a thread for Jussi. I only hope it's because everyone's getting one. Stay, being one of the best keepers in the top flight should be enough of a reason I'd say.

Not to sure on this,my heart says let him stay but then again is his time up.We all in general think that the time he has put in to OUR CLUB that he should be No 1,commitment cant be defaulted (love him to death for that). His childen are Bolton born and bred, and his family life revolves round Bolton, may be he would find it hard to relocate to another area if he had to move.........1 may be 2 more seasons with Al-Habsi taking more prem starts and Jussi backing off to be Goalie coach. Just an idea folks!

If we get an offer of a pot full of gold, and a few clubs are hunting for good keepers, It might make sense for him to go seeing as we've got Ali. But only in the most extreme circumstance if not let's keep the 35 year old.

Just been looking at the stats on the Sky Sports website. While we have the fourth worst defence in the league, only Burnley's Brian Jensen has made more saves than Jussi this season.
To me that paints a bad picture of the defence and not the goalkeeper. Jussi's position is still safe IMO.

Jussi is quality. Had the defence been better, he would have looked a lot better than he did this season.

Exactly. A test of a goalkeeper is putting him infront of a wobbly defence. It's easy to say the likes of the top 4 or so have the best goalies but, given the quality/consistency of their defence, are they truly tested on a weekly basis?

I really think that without Jaaskelainen we'd have been relegated in four seasons of our current Premiership run. He is the difference in almost every win we get, and we would realize after three games without him just how important he still is to the team.

Keep him definately. But also do something to keep Al-Habsi at the club I think he's an excellent keeper. Offer him a season-long loan to another premiership or championship side maybe?

Go for me. Had a poor season by his standards and was lucky to get the shirt back from Habsi. Gets beaten at his near post too often, weak in the air for a guy his size and doesnt communicate well with his defence. Has been very good for this club but time for a change.

Go - but for completely different reasons to Weststander.
Jussi isn't getting any younger and is maintaining his current good level rather than improving IMO. For me, Al Habsi is a fantastic goalkeeper who is the perfect replacement for Jussi. Plus, the money we could get for Jussi would help Owen Coyle in his quest to build his team. Remember, we also have Bogdan (an ideal no.2 to Al Habsi), so we wouldn't need to spend any of the money we got from Jussi's transfer on the GK position.

Crewe fans thought he was shite. It's abit soon in his career to be a Premier League sub keeper. If Al Habsi gets an injury or turns out not to be "the one" everyone proclaims he will be then we'd be screwed.
We need to give Ali more game time next season, but I think letting a keeper of Jussi's class and experience go would be a mistake.

He's already shown his class at the end of the 07/08 season. but I think letting a keeper of Jussi's class and experience go would be a mistake. The sad truth is, we may need to sell our best players to raise the funds. Jussi can be replaced by someone just as good who's already at the club. The extra money could well be used to buy that goalscorer we so desperately need.

How much would we get for a 35 year old goalkeeper coming off an average season? 2/3M? That might buy us a league one striker.
He has shown his class. But five/six good games towards the end of the season isn't proof enough to throw away an experienced keeper and risk it all on Habsi. If he gets all the cup games and a handful of league games next season and holds up well then maybe think about letting Jussi go at the end of next season. But with less than 10 games under his belt, it is very risky to bin Jussi and pin it all on Ali.
For the record I do think Ali is a good keeper and I want him to stick around because I think he could be our number one for the next six/seven years.
We have to approach it with caution though and selling Jussi for the sake of a couple of million seems pointless just in case Ali can't handle the pressures of being conisistant over a 38 game season.

Jussi is supposed to be a top Premier keeper but when he was out of contract 2 summers ago no one even made him an offer. I think this season Jussi has been extremely ordinary and I find it really hard on Al Habsi for not getting a chance to show what he can do. The reality is that no club would come in for Jussi so its irrelevant. But if some club were to offer £2m plus for him then I'd sell him. Al Habsi deserves his chance now. I personally think Al Habsi is a far more important person at the club than Jussi because in Al Habsi we have a quality keeper for the next 7 or 8 years, whereas Jussi I am not sure he has more than a year or two left in him.

Not even read the posts on this thread, I know Al Habsi is a decent goalkeeper but anyone that thinks we should get rid of Jaaskelainen is absolutely bonkers IMO
