He's crap and he's a scumbag. Usually we only manage to get one of those attributes in our players. He'd be a definite step forward in our streamlining of the squad.

Marlon King may well be a scumbag, but he most certainly is not crap. I have seen him play live several times and he has pace and a good shot and was developing his close skills, being able to turn a defender to get space to shoot. Who do we have in the squad now that can score a goal as good as the one he scored at 2:03 in the video below? He is a scumbag, so don't take him home after the game for tea and crumpets. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzcnISiVhSo&feature=related

Since when did we get on our high horse about players? It wasn't so long ago we had a chant that went "he drinks, he drives, he spits in people's eyes: El-Hadji Diouf" so where this has come from I've no idea.
Admittedly he isn't the best on the pitch and if people don't want him for his footballing ability then fair enough. But if we got him and he scored on his debut, not one fan would say "yeah but he is a scumbag". By the way I'm not condoning his actions there, but just pointing out how easily fans would conveniently forget about them if he came in and started well.

"Close skills" is not typical English football. Playing with people like Ricardo Fuller of Stoke encouraged him to try something new. He still kicks the ball into the goal. Do we not like that?

The difference is on his day Diouf was world class, Marlon on the other hand...... So while they are both scumbags, only one of them is/was good.

I am sorry but Diouf was never world class on his day, Messi is world class. Are you telling me that Diouf reached those levels of performance in a wanderers shirt? On his day diouf was a very good and effective player but sadly too often he didnt turn up or fancy it.

Yer sorry Sharps, a slight over reaction on my part there. I mean on his day he put in performances that even Youri couldn't rise up to but like you say, them days were not often.

Another over reaction there mate. Diouf wasn't fit to lace Youris boots.

Aye, I didnt want to correct him again so thought I would leave it to somebody else. Diouf never reached the levels of performances that Okocha and Djorkaeff and countless others managed in a Bolton shirt but like I said, he was very good on his day but not often enough.

Yes, he is. 75 Prem games, 12 goals. Simple.

That strike rate isn't to dissimilar to a striker we currently have on our book.... 55 Prem games, 8 goals. Simple

If Elmander gets 8 this season I'll count it as a good return. Not enough for the money we shelled out on him, obviously, but that's not the issue any more.

I dont hold out much hope but I am hoping and praying he can justify his fee.

He'll never justify his fee. Elmander, in the right system, could be useful; but he'll never be a 10mil (or 8 or 9 or whatever we paid) player. He either needs to play the right role, or he needs to go. I get the feeling neither will happen.

I didnt mean justify his fee, I meant that hopefully he will look like a 8 million pound forward this season rather than the 1 million pound forward he has looked thus far.

From a striker, yes. The trouble is that Elmander isn't one. Toulouse put him up top but gave him full license and he roamed and did his thing. It's just that Megson saw a big lad and assumed he was a centre-forward and therefore that's how he's being used. I said to Jimbo when we signed him that we'd be lucky to get 8 or so out of him and he'd bomb if we used him as a striker and I'm sticking with that. The trouble is that Davo is understandably first choice and therefore Elmo can't play his proper role in a 4-4-2 or we'd have no runner. 8 goals is a good return from Johan Elmander. Used properly he is also capable of a few assists and linking play, but we'll probably play him as a full-on forward again and he'll do very little. To be honest I'll be surprised if his confidence isn't so shot that he can't even perform if given a free-hand.
