"...the events of 1958 meant that Bolton Wanderers and not Manchester City should be considered the natural enemies of Manchester United"

Interesting article (pages 35-37): http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=ueYTmo5apM4C&lpg=PA36&ots=ln6wg6oFJI&dq=salford%20stoning%20the%20bolton%20bus&pg=PA42#v=onepage&q=&f=false

Salford stoning the Bolton bus?

My father in law was there. He's a quiet man, rarely gets riled about anything, but mention Munich & he goes off on one. His usual word for them is: Animals.

I didn't realise that the build-up to the 1958 Final was so acrimonious.

Bolton supporters thought that the whole event was being turned into a glorified wake by 'morbid sensation mongers' and that they were just expected to make up the numbers. Even the Manchester press said that the Cup Final was in danger of becoming 'a cruel farce for Bolton'.

Nat Lofthouse barging Harry Gregg into the back of the neck for one of the goals added to the tension: http://www.britishpathe.com/record.php?id=35187

When Bolton returned home with the Cup, their coach was stoned by Utd supporters as it drove through Kearsley on the way back from Piccadilly Station: http://www.britishpathe.com/record.php?id=35190

I have reported you for being abusive, your abuse and your reign of terror can go on no more, you have already threatened Natasha and now your throwing wild accusations at vital cog in the Burnden Aces machine.

I agree with Diana that what the topic starter put was quite useful and informative thus ruling you and him being the same, I apologise to Spirit of Burnden as nobody wants to be branded Sjoerd or Chris Amos or whatever name you go by these days.

Mr Sharps, your complaint noted and acted upon.

Mr Amos, no more personal abuse like that again.

Big Sharps could take legal action for such remarks - see here -

So please the both of you - pack it in.

Thank you.

"From that day to this, I have hated Bolton Wanderers and Nat Lofthouse in particular with a passion unreserved for any other team to the point where when Lofthouse walked onto the pitch for the Munich anniversary I was almost physically sick"

That makes pleasant reading.

It almost makes me physically sick when young Bolton supporters get worked up about non entities like Wigan,Blackburn and Tranmere.

"What was the homecoming like?
Wonderful. It wasn't very good through Salford though. They pelted us with tomatoes. We didn't feel a thing. We'd won. Talk about happy lads. We got a big bonus for winning. About ten grand apiece. (Laughter). £25 was all we got."

http://www.boltonrevisited.org.uk/s-bwfc-1958.html

I've seen a photo of the coach being pelted with missiles as it passed through Salford. It was on the front page of the local paper at the time. If i can find it, i'll post it.

I wonder if that United fan who got a hiding in the East Lower is out of hospital yet?! It's a good job he never snuck into the North Lower, he'd probably be dead now!

In fact i was reading the article at lunchtime - very fascinating and great insight into how the trouble began between the two clubs.  Unfortunately I couldn't view the videos and noe seen them (as I am home) and damn good :-)

Spirit, firstly I would like to apologise for almost hijacking your thread, and, secondly, I agree with Squidgy it has to be the best opening post from any user!  In fact its got me interested to read around teh subject even more - i think I will be glued to my pc at lunchtimes more often

Thanks

One of the footnotes of '58 is that Duncan Edwards was poised to sign for Bolton until Matt Busby stepped in and he signed for Utd, according to his cousin Dennis Stevens, who played for Bolton in the '58 Final. Imagine a team featuring BOTH Nat Lofthouse and Duncan Edwards!
