We do have some players who are brilliant in their positions, we know they are when they are turning out for the top domestic sides week in week out and helping, some leading, their teams to league titles and often European titles aswell. The problem is that while they are all good on their own they find it so hard to knit together as a team.

This is down to the fact we can only see them play for their country probably 4/5 times a season and we complain that is too much because we are, and always will be a club-first nation. With so many league, cup and European games that the majority of our England players are involved in there is just no feasible way they can get together enough to gel and make a world class team rather than just world class players.

I agree that we have some 'good' players but they are far from world class like they're portrayed in the media. Rooney is World Class. That's about it.

I think Gerrard was world class whether or not he is declining as a player or the off field problems or injuries have affected his season but he has been pretty average this season.

Its funny how for some reason if your the leading goalscorer in the prem at this stage of the season your the best player in the world according to the media, yet if for example eto'o was the leading goalscorer in serie A he isnt considerd the best either....what im saying is just because rooney is the highest scorer at the moment doesnt mean he is the best, even though he is up there.

For the record after seeing Messi last night id say he is the best player in the world at the moment.

Nobody was saying Rooney is better than Messi though because that would be stupid and even me who hates munich with every ounce of my body can appreciated that he probably is playing like the worlds best player at the moment and with a good world cup could be a dead cert for world football of the year.

Going back to dh's comments about only Rooney being world class , I would put Ashley Cole in that category as I think he is the best left back in world football and we have plenty of players who are capable of causing teams problems when the tournament starts so I wouldnt rule us out just yet.
