Shawshank
For some reason i had never watched this film in my life before this weekend, it lasts a long time but i now put it right up there with favourite movies of all times. Brilliant film
I kinda thought he wanted the rock hammer for digging himself out when he asked for it near the beginning, but didn't expect the ending and how things all came together.
Reminded me in a way of the Green Mile, which is one my classics.
Nothing beats Avatar though!
My top 3
Avatar Lord of Rings trilogy Transformers 1+2
Edit - renamed title of thread.

Agree about the Shawshank Redemption and the Green Mile. Both are in my top 10 films ever.
Stuff like Avatar doesn't do anything for me TBH.
We should have a random film recommendation thread.
I'll start (oddly enough both with subtitles). Delicatessen and Betty Blue

I just watched 500 Days of Summer and I thought it was quite excellent for the type of movie it is. It stars Zoey Dechanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Green Mile and Shawshank Redemption are excellent movies. Avatar isn't my cup of tea but I'll watch it when it is on DVD.
I'm really looking forward to the new Sherlock Holmes to come out on DVD.
Shutter Island (with Leo Di Caprio) looks really good.

Mrs Wakey dragged me to the pictures over christmas to watch Avatar. Wasn't too enthusiastic beforehand, but have to say it is an excellent film and one I would recommend.
Tough to pick a favourite film, but Usual Suspects and LA Confidential would both be up there for me.

Shawshank is one of my favourite films. Love The Count Of Monte Cristo too(2002 version)
Think I prefer COMC just ahead of Shawshank but both fantastic films.

I don't know if you've seen Sherlock Holmes Wendy but it's a fantastic film. Ok the tempo of the film is much higher than previous portrayals of Homes but I feel that the characters are closer to the book than before. The script is a stroke of genius, Mark Strong is as good as ever and also Downey-jr and Law make such a great double act. And finally it's incredibly funny. A film I've watched quite recently that I'd recommend is The Lives of Others, it's a gritty, spy film/drama which takes place in East Germany. The script is razor sharp, has taut direction and also the three leads put in a fantastic performance.

Hope you don't mind Diddle but I've renamed the thread so that people can use it to post their news and views of films they see / want to see.
If the thread becomes popular and well used we will make it in to a sticky.

TO me there will always be one definitive Sherlock Holmes - The late Jeremy Brett (a relation of Martin Clunes)!! Anyway my all time fvaourite films so far...... TOP SPOT and will be for some considerable time - Trading Places then in no particular order..... Silver Streak The Cassandra Crossing (and I don't mean the railway bridge at Darcy Lever) The Italian Job (Original one) LOTR trilogy

I have to agree Brett did a very good Holmes, whilst Richard Roxburgh made a mean one too.

Balls to your wishy washy Hollywood blockbusting tripe. im suprised nobody has said Titanic or Gladiator yet!?
The of the greatest modern films ever, and probably my all time favourite, which is actually in 2 parts p1, “L'instinct de mort” & p2 “L'ennemi public n°1” is released today on double dvd & blu-ray – mine should come tomorrow as I pre-ordered it weeks ago.
It’s a French film all about Jaques Mesrine, the famous French outlaw, and stars Vincent Cassel (La Haine, Eastern Promises) who without doubt would have got the Best Actor Oscar for this if it was made in America!
Its pretty grim, very violent but the story and acting and suspense is incredible, Hitchcock-esque even at the end! Do yourselves a favour – get it!
btw, 500 days of summer is excellent too.

How is The Lives of Others a "wishy washy Hollywood blockbusting tripe?" It's in German for goodness sake.

There's always one film snobb!! The reason most of us watch mainstream hollywood films is because we've a good idea whether it's (allegedly) any good or not, or to our taste, before watching it. The alternative involves wasting half your life watching absolute obscure bollocks in the hope of finding the occasional gem. And, of course, the associated pleasure of being able to brag about it to strangers on the internet. (The Lives of Others was a decent film, but if it hadn't been on Sky, I'd never have seen it!)

The best film of all time is 'Back To The Future'.
It's rare for a "family film" to be any good, this just happens to be the best ever.

So when i see a thread title 'Film Review Thread' i get excited that i am going to be reccommended a few new gems, but then at the top of the page is friggin Shawshank! (good film granted, but who on this planet hasnt seen that?) i felt a tad dejected.

The original thread title was 'Shawshank', I changed it a few posts in when it became a more general discussion on films.
Apologises if the thread initially misled you.

To be fair, his rationale is he wants me to watch them just so (I can suffer as well) he can discuss how bad they were. His latest "recommendation" is 'A Perfect Getaway' - would appreciate feedback if anyone's seen it (to save me watching it).

Forget the bland US remake but the original Japanese version of The Ring (I don't mean LOTR) trilogy are horific and puts the US version to shame!!!!
I was well damn scared after watching them - and that does take alot!

well for the record, Mesrine certainly isn’t some poncey foreign nouveau art house film – it’s a proper action packed gangster flick, just in French. And its brilliant.

Anybody seen the "horror" film shrooms?
I watched it tuesday night and found it to be the biggest load of shite ive seen for sometime , nothing really happens until about 30 minutes till the end and there is a plot twist at the end which is rendered meaningless because the whole film is so terrible it makes you not care about the twist.

Squidgy thread tangent - A lad I know off WWs is down in London for the week on a training course. He was in Liecester Square when the premiere of Invicticus was on. Managed to get this snap as he stumbled into the middle of it (how pissed off were all the fans that had waited all afternoon in the cold and rain?)
