Firm’s mistake gave worker a £1.4m pay packet

AN honest warehouse worker who gave back bosses £800,000 wrongly paid into his bank account has been rewarded with a crate of beer.

Shocked Co-op employee Stephen Foster knew it wasn’t just his Christmas bonus when his pay-slip showed the firm had paid him £1.4m.

The friend said: “He must have been paid the money at the start of the month.

“I heard about it through another friend and had a chat with Stephen who showed me the pay-slip.

“You could see all the deductions on it for tax and things. It goes without saying everyone who heard about it was very surprised. It was looking like a superb Christmas bonus.

“You’d think the temptation to leave the country would cross your mind. It’s quite a thing.

“But he didn’t touch a penny and he made sure he gave it straight back. It’s a wonderful thing to hear at this time of year.”

A Co-operative Group spokesman joined in praise of Stephen’s honesty.

He said: “Due to a error in our wages department earlier this month an employee at our Birtley Regional Distribution Centre, received a monthly salary payment of £1.4m.

“After deductions, around £800,000 was paid into his bank account. This was somewhat higher than he would normally expect but thanks to his honesty and that of his girlfriend, who first spotted the error, he immediately informed us of the mistake.

“We were surprised and concerned about our mistake but not by Stephen’s exemplary behaviour, which is typical of him. Coming as it does just before Christmas, it’s the kind of act that renews your faith in human nature.”

A spokesperson for the Co-operative group said: “We can confirm that Stephen’s line manager has given him a crate of Budweiser as an immediate thank-you.

“Following the line manager’s recommendation that the Co-operative group formally thank him, the matter has been escalated to our head office in Manchester where it is receiving active consideration.

“We expect to be able to reward Stephen before Christmas.”

What a bunch of greedy grasping tight bastards a crate of Bud for honestly pointing out youve been overpaid £1.4 mill

Unless the Pikey bastard asked for it. In which case he wants a slap

I wouldnt settle for nowt less than a 5k Christmas bonus and a free bounce on the MD's daughter

Fair play to him, it goes to show who the greedy bastards are, people that have their own companies.

Tough times innit.

No firm is ever going to be nice, they wouldn't surive otherwise.  They'll get away with the least they can part with.

If he did a runner, wouldn't he be facing a lengthy prison sentence?

I would have been very tempted to but a new ID and do a runner to southern france, fair play to the guy he would have probablly been sent to jail or sacked if he hadnt told the company.....not sure why coz its the companies own fcuking fault.

I would avoid southern france as it is alledgedly one of tim rigbys haunts but to be fair to the guy he probably thought they would click on eventually and expect the money back so if he was honest he may get 20k or something along them lines.

The real people everybody should be mocking and annoyed at are co-op the greedy bastards , he does that and you give him a £10-15 crate of fcuking beer? unbelieavable!

fcuking greedy bastards . I dont use them much anyway but I will make sure I avoid them from now on.

Someone in coop's wages dept royally fcuked up.
The bloke was paid a large amount of money he hadn't earned and wasn't morally or legally entitled to.
He took the only sensible option to him and told them before they found out (which they would have done very shortly anyway).
His immediate gaffer gave him a crate of booze as a thank you.
Coop have forwarded details to head office to determine a reward for his honesty.
He hasn't saved them any brass - they would have spotted it soon enough anyway - or done anything other than the only sensible (and decent) thing available to him.

So how the fcuk does this reflect badly on coop?

As for Howfen's earlier post - this shows that people who own businesses are greedy bastards, or words to that effect - I posted a response when I first read it last night calling him a fcukwit. I then thought that I should dwell on it for a bit rather than post something I may later regret.

Having now let 24 hours pass ... Howfen, you are a fcukwit.
