Firm’s mistake gave worker a £1.4m pay packet
AN honest warehouse worker who gave back bosses £800,000 wrongly paid into his bank account has been rewarded with a crate of beer.
Shocked Co-op employee Stephen Foster knew it wasn’t just his Christmas bonus when his pay-slip showed the firm had paid him £1.4m.
The friend said: “He must have been paid the money at the start of the month.
“I heard about it through another friend and had a chat with Stephen who showed me the pay-slip.
“You could see all the deductions on it for tax and things. It goes without saying everyone who heard about it was very surprised. It was looking like a superb Christmas bonus.
“You’d think the temptation to leave the country would cross your mind. It’s quite a thing.
“But he didn’t touch a penny and he made sure he gave it straight back. It’s a wonderful thing to hear at this time of year.”
A Co-operative Group spokesman joined in praise of Stephen’s honesty.
He said: “Due to a error in our wages department earlier this month an employee at our Birtley Regional Distribution Centre, received a monthly salary payment of £1.4m.
“After deductions, around £800,000 was paid into his bank account. This was somewhat higher than he would normally expect but thanks to his honesty and that of his girlfriend, who first spotted the error, he immediately informed us of the mistake.
“We were surprised and concerned about our mistake but not by Stephen’s exemplary behaviour, which is typical of him. Coming as it does just before Christmas, it’s the kind of act that renews your faith in human nature.”
A spokesperson for the Co-operative group said: “We can confirm that Stephen’s line manager has given him a crate of Budweiser as an immediate thank-you.
“Following the line manager’s recommendation that the Co-operative group formally thank him, the matter has been escalated to our head office in Manchester where it is receiving active consideration.
“We expect to be able to reward Stephen before Christmas.”
