I liked Smith but he's never a midfielder. If he was a strking option, then £2m would be a good deal imo, provided that the wage demands are realistic. He shouldn't be a replacement for Sean davis though although I suppose a player who can 'supposedly' play in two positions would be a good purchase for a team with our squad size.

£2m for Alan Smith would be a bargain. He's alright CM, and can do the job, but he'd be a decent robust forward who scores goals too. I remember when Utd started the season with all their forwards out, Smith played as their starting striker and scored 7 goals in 11 games. He's only 28 so would be good value for us.

This is a player, especially at 2 million, that I'd be happy to see join us. I'd hoped we would sign him in the past.
He is passionate and committed...Megson likes that...and has could still offer alot to us.

Yep, at 2 million you can't really grumble at that. He's a good player as everybody above says and for that price could be a steal, after being relegated with the toon getting a shot in the prem again would spare him on and if he gets back to his best, as do our players then our team is looking good, i'm sure he will fit in well with taylor,cahill,muamba,gardner etc etc then we have a squad that imo should be able to target euefa cup.

We'd never pay thatb though. We couldn't afford it. That's why players like Smith and Noaln, who could do a job at a lower - midtable Prem club remain at Newcastle as no-one, bar Newcastle, are stupid enough to pay them that.
If I told you that Big Sam was the manager who signed him on his reported £75,000 a WEEK wages - (or £3.9 million a year - or say for a three year contract £11.7 million) - would that change anybody's mind about giving him the £20m he wanted to 'turn us into a Champions League side'?

On those wages, Smith won't be going anywhere. The_Gibbon feels that when Smiths contract expires with Newcastle, that he will have to settle for a lower wage no matter where he goes. £75K is simply too much money for a distinctly average player, who doesn't even have a proper "full time" position on the pitch. Is he a striker or a midfielder? |

Smith was a fairly decent player many years ago, he has done NOTHING in ages apart from sit in the stands with an injured knee/hamstring/arse.

Not a bad player if we could do something about his wages. Depending on Newcastle's situation we may be able to do a deal with them, after all at the moment they are liable for them. Does anyone know how long he has left on his contract? If he is in the last year he might be willing to take less money on a longer contract. He was once a fantastic player, I think playing him in midfield since he has overcome his injury problems has limited his chances of recovering that, if the wages can be reduced or offset then he would be an interesting option.
We also need another winger with a right foot, if we are going to play the formation we played against Tottenham, which would seem sensible as it is the best we have played since Megson arrived. If Lee were to pick up an injury, Taylor is no right winger, also now we have Lee's set pieces does Taylor really merit a place in the team, he has been poor this season and other than the odd goal his contribution has always been more grunt than guile.

Tim, agreed. Taylor comes into his own when we get a free kick. He has been unlucky twice so far this season. If it transpires that Chung Yong Lee is competent at dead ball situations then Matty may have to raise his game to stay in the team.

As you say Lee is going to have to prove it and over several games, but I thought he corners were fantastic, really whipped in, which makes them so hard to defend.

Have to agree with Natasha, as Alan Smith is more of the same, sorry but I can't get excited about this one. Where is the pace, flair and technical ability that is so lacking in our midfield ?

It's a bloody disgrace if Megson brings in Billy the Fish after Al Habsi's spent so long as Jussi's patient understudy. The large breasted squaw could be useful back-up on the wing though. |

Saw an interview with Kilgallon the other day claiming he hasn't been offered a new contract and may well move on in the summer.
I reckon a 1-2M bid in January and he could be ours.
