ANNUAL REVIEW: 2007 - Monday 31st December 2007

HERO OF THE YEAR - NICOLAS ANELKA

In a miserable year for Bolton Wanderers, Anelka has been one of few positives to come out of 2007.

Signed by Sam Allardyce in August 2006, the Frenchman struggled initially but found his scoring touch towards the back end of 2006.

He finished the 06/07 season strongly and carried his form forward into this season, where he has 11 goals to his name.

Only time will tell whether or not he will hang around for 2008.

VILLAIN OF THE YEAR - SAM ALLARDYCE

After a successful eight year period as manager, Sam Allardyce resigned from his post in April with the claim he "needed a break".

Big Sam returned to Bolton for the final match of the 06/07 season where a 2-2 draw with Aston Villa saw his former side qualify for the UEFA Cup.

However, much respect for Allardyce was lost amongst the Bolton faithful just two days later when he was named as Newcastle United's new manager, replacing Glen Roeder.

HIGH OF THE YEAR - UEFA CUP DRAW WITH BAYERN MUNICH

At the start of November, over 4,000 Wanderers fans invaded Bayern Munich's Allianz Arena. What was about to happen was one of the biggest shocks European football has ever seen.

Ricardo Gardner had put Bolton into a surprise early lead, but a goal either side of the break from Lukas Podolski put their German hosts in front.

However, with less than 10 minutes to play, a quick throw-in caught out the Bayern defence and after good work from Kevin Nolan, Kevin Davies fired low and hard past Oliver Kahn to send Wanderers fans into raptures and earn a 2-2 draw. A night they will never forget.

LOW OF THE YEAR - BIG SAM'S OPENING DAY RETURN

After leaving the club four months earlier, Sam Allardyce returned with his Newcastle side for the opening day of the 07/08 season to a whole host of abuse from Wanderers fans.

However, Big Sam was to have the last laugh as poor football from Bolton allowed the Magpies to take a 3-0 lead into the break.

Although Nicolas Anelka pulled one back for Bolton, Newcastle held on to claim a comfortable 3-1 victory away from home.

GOAL OF THE YEAR - NICOLAS ANELKA ( V NEWCASTLE UNITED - 11/08/07 )

He scored a sublime volley against Everton back in September, but Anelka's goal on the opening day of the 07/08 season gets the nod.

Trailing Newcastle 3-0, the Magpies were pushing for a fourth but got caught too far up field. Gary Speed's headed clearance from a corner set Gavin McCann on the break, Kevin Nolan took over and fed the ball to Anelka who beat his defender before firing the ball through Steve Harper's legs and into the bottom corner to complete a great counter-attack.

ONE TO WATCH FOR 2008 - DANNY GUTHRIE

Now an established figure in the Wanderers midfield, Guthrie has made a big impact during his loan spell from Liverpool. 2008 promises to be a big year for the youngster who Bolton fans will be hoping to keep.
